Tonight over 12,000 of our neighbors are experiencing homelessness, with more than 70% in Seattle and more than 50% outside of a shelter.

Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, motivated by the good news of the gospel, provides extensive 360-degree support and recovery services for homeless men, women, and children throughout King County. They serve thousands of meals a day and house over 500 men, women, and children in emergency shelters and treatment programs every night, showing them the love of Jesus by meeting their needs.

DCC has served with and supported UGM for a number of years, through various means of volunteering, partnership, and financial support. This year, we’re focusing our Advent Drive to help UGM with their greatest tangible needs during the winter months – which includes simple necessities and clothing.

We have been rescued by the grace of God, in Jesus, and have been entrusted as stewards by his grace. Let’s take to heart the instructions we have in scripture to practically care for our neighbors, not to earn his love, but to reflect his love to our city.

If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,
and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? James 2:15-16

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18

3 Ways to Contribute

There are many ways to incorporate giving to our neighbors into our family worship this season. Some families use the holiday season as an opportunity to teach their kids about giving to others, and might prefer to shop for specific items to donate. Others may wish to make the biggest impact with their gifts by buying items in bulk, perhaps in conjunction with their community. And still others may prefer to give financially to support the ongoing work of UGM. We’d encourage you to prayerfully consider how you might join us in supporting the men, women, and children experiencing homelessness this season.
  1. Online purchases – you can purchase bulk discount items for UGM’s most critical needs, ranging from $30-400, at this site.
  2. Physical donations – you can bring in new, or like-new, articles of clothing, throughout the month of December – we’ll have large bins set up around the commons area to collect items. Clothing for all ages/sizes are needed, but Men’s Jeans sizes 32-38 are currently the biggest need.
  3. Financial donation – If you would like to make a donation directly to UGM, alongside other’s in our body, please click here.
