The Life-Giving Lord of the Sabbath

This morning we continue our series in the Gospel of Luke, one of four eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ words and works. In them we learn of his life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations—even us. Today he has yet another conflict with the Pharisees, this time, over the nature of the Sabbath, which was the great sign of the old covenant between God and his people. Here we unexpectedly learn that Jesus is the life-giving Lord of the Sabbath.

The Incomparable Glory of the Risen Jesus

On Good Friday we remembered Jesus’ substitutionary death on the cross. Today, on Easter, we celebrate Jesus’ climactic victory over the grave through his resurrection. In our passage today, we get a glimpse into real reality with the incomparable glory of the risen Jesus at the center. It reminds us that no matter what we face, or how bad things may look, the risen Jesus is at work in unimaginable ways.

The Groom Has Come For His Bride

In them we learn of his life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations- even us. Today the Pharisees question why Jesus’ disciples don’t fast. Jesus answers with a question, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?” Jesus is the groom who has come for his bride, so this is not a time for fasting but feasting.

Today, we come to another moving scene in which Jesus heals a paralytic, but first, surprisingly, forgives his sins. It made the crowd, and it should make us, ask, “Who can forgive sin but God alone?” Our entire life rests on our answer to that question.
