In Acts 2:14-41, Peter stands up on the Day of Pentecost to preach the first post-ascension, Holy Spirit-empowered Christian sermon to a crowd of unbelieving Jews. God has been exceedingly gracious (Eph 3:20,21) to us as a newly forming Jesus-loving, gospel-centered, Bible-believing people in heart of our great city. We’re growing numerically, people are meeting and maturing in Jesus, more communities are needed, and sin is coming into the light of Jesus’ grace. The demand for more leaders has never been greater. It has been quite an adventure and we have only just started (literally).

Today, in Ephesians 6:5-9, we look at the work of the gospel and the gospel at work. God wants to redeem and transform all of our lives, not just a portion of them. Therefore, to be a Christian does not merely mean your Sunday schedule changes. Rather, by trusting and treasuring Jesus, you receive new forgiveness, are made part of a new people (i.e. the church), and placed in right relationship with a new, true, God. This naturally results in redeemed marriages (5:22-33), redeemed families (6:1-4) and redeemed workplaces (6:5-9). The Bible is extremely practical. God is laying out the divine ordering of the most important relationships in our life.

In Ephesians 6:1-5, we move onto the next set of household relationships: parents and children. These relationships (parents to children; children to parents) are the most dynamic, complicated and influential relationships we have. Here, Paul explains that the primary task of parenting is to cultivate a Jesus-centered home and the primary task of children is to honor their parents.

In Ephesians 5:22-33, we have the longest statement on the relationship between husbands and wives in the New Testament. Last week we looked at God’s call to husbands to sacrificially love, protect and provide for their wives. This week, we examined the controversial and often misunderstood topic of “submission.” Wives are called by God to submit by freely, gladly, and fully respecting her husband’s leadership – just like the Church does Christ.
