In them we learn of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations. These are primary sources making them of incomparable worth. There are no books like these books. Today, we meet Zechariah and Elizabeth, a godly couple facing a tragic circumstance, who God uses to show us that everything will be fulfilled in time.

We begin a new series in the Gospel of Luke. Luke is one of the four NT Gospel accounts (with Matthew, Mark, and John) of Jesus’ words and works. There are no books like these books. In our passage today, 1:1-4, Luke reveals his goal is to give us “certainty concerning the things we’ve been taught.”

Today is the second of five fall sermons in a series we are calling The Living Word, based on Hebrews 4:12, in which God’s Word is described as ”living and active.” His Word is alive and changes lives. Each week we are reflecting on a different biblical song that emerges around the arrival of God-in-the-flesh, Jesus Christ. Last week, we considered Zechariah’s Song (Lk. 1:67-80). Today, we will look at The Angels’ Song (Lk. 2:14) sung by a multitude of the heavenly host declaring God’s glory and peace. Let us consider what this means for us this season.

Today we launch our Advent series titled the “Songs of Christmas.” Our hope is to freshly stir affections around the wonder of the incarnation that Jesus, is Emmanuel God with us! We are asking that the Spirit would take the old- old-story, and blow our minds away with new wonder as we see together how the great Author entered the story that He wrote, to weave us into the epic redemptive story He is still writing. This morning, we begin in Luke 1:46-56, with Mary’s song of faith-filled wonder and joyful submission to the sovereign goodness of God.

Today, we end on the Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector found in Luke 18:9-14. This parable is a beautiful, yet shocking, picture of the upside-down nature of the kingdom of God. It confronts us with the all-important question, “How do I know where I stand with God?” and is a fitting conclusion to our series.
