We are on the tail end of our study through First Timothy. Paul’s words here are not mere pastoral advice or apostolic counsel, but God’s priorities for a healthy local, Jesus-loving, Bible-believing, Gospel-centered church. Today, in 1Tim 6:3-5, Paul directly
addresses the topic of false teaching.

The last two chapters of 1 Timothy deal predominantly with relationships among various groups within the church: relating to different age groups (5:1-2), relating to those in greatest need (5:3-16), relating to pastors (5:17-25), and, today, relating to one another at work (6:1-2).

Last week, we saw the letter shift its focus, with the start of chapter five, to address how to navigate the many varied relationships that exist within the church. The big question today, in 5:17-25: how is the church to relate to the leadership of the church?

Today we make a turn into the latter half of the letter that predominantly deals with how to navigate the many and varied relationships that exist within the church. The big question we face in 5:1-16 is how do we best care for those in greatest need among us?

Today, as with last week, the entire tone of the letter changes as Paul shifts his attention from the church to Timothy. He warns and encourages Timothy to keep a close watch on himself and his teaching, for by doing so he will save both himself and his hearers.

Today, in 4:6-10, the entire tone of the letter changes as Paul shifts his attention from the church to Timothy. He warns and encourages Timothy that if he is to be a good servant of Jesus Christ there are certain things that must be true of him – and us.

Today, in 4:1-6, Paul warns us that “some will depart from the faith” and then helps us to understand some of causes behind that. This is helpful not only for understanding how this happens in the lives of others but also for understanding how it could happen in our life.

In 1 Tim 3:14-16 we get to the heart of Paul’s letter to Timothy. The entire letter radiates out from the truth contained in this section. Here we see, more clearly and dramatically than anywhere else, what is at stake in Ephesus – and for us in our great city of Seattle. Paul clarifies that he is not merely going for a change of behavior within the church, but a realignment of the church around truth itself – after all it is the pillar and buttress of the truth.
